Infrared Reflectography

Infrared Reflectography is a technique that captures images within the infrared spectrum, at wavelengths above what the human eye can see. This technique can sometimes view and capture carbon-based (charcoal or pencil) underdrawings beneath the paint layers. The IR equipment at The Art Conservatory can capture images at 850nm, 930nm, and 1000nm.

Ultraviolet Fluorescence

Ultraviolet Fluorescence has the ability to identify natural versus synthetic varnishes, as well as areas of non-original overpaints / retouches or inpaints. In some cases, Ultraviolet Fluorescence can also be used to identify certain pigment types. UVF at The Art Conservatory makes use of specialized 365nm light sources for the examination and imaging of artworks.
